Working Principle

Capacitors are electrical components designed to store and release energy on demand. When an alternating current (AC) voltage is applied across a capacitor, the capacitor stores electrical charge and temporarily helps to smooth out any variations in the current. The 105PHC400K consists of two metallic plates that are separated by an insulating layer known as a dielectric. The electric field created across the dielectric is what stores energy. As AC voltage is applied to the capacitor, electric charge accumulates on the plates and electric field across the dielectric starts to build. As the electric field builds, the self-healing capabilities of the metallized polypropylene film acts to repair any minor damages such as punctured insulation layers. When the electric field strength overcomes the dielectric strength, a spark will be created, thereby releasing the stored electric charge.
