It is this combination of current-carrying aluminum and electrolyte that gives the aluminum electrolytic capacitor its unique characteristics.When a voltage is applied, an electric current causes the formation of a highly porous layer of aluminum oxide on the anode surface. This layer is extremely thin, yet incredibly strong, creating a barrier that prevents the electrolyte from reacting with the aluminum. This barrier comprises a large surface area with very small insulation resistance which results in an extremely high capacitance value per unit volume.The second component of aluminum electrolytic capacitor is the cathode, which is an aluminum foil with etched portion. This foil contains a chemical treatment which provides a surface for the electrolyte to react with and form a solid electrolyte interface (SEI). This SEI layer acts as a medium for electrochemical energy transfer which enables the capacitor to store maximum energy within a relatively small space.As with any type of capacitor, aluminum electrolytic capacitors store and release energy using principles of electrostatic charge. When a capacitive load is applied, both positive and negative charges build up on both sides of the capacitor simultaneously, leading to the formation of an electric field. This electric field causes a current to flow through the capacitor, allowing energy to be stored within.When the voltage is removed, the electric field collapses, causing the positive and negative charges to neutralize and release the energy stored in the capacitor.
