TVS - Diodes

A Transient Voltage Suppressor diode (TVS diode), also known as a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) or an breakdown diode, is a silicon-based solid-state voltage protection device that functions as a fast-acting protector for electronic circuits. TVS diodes are specifically designed to protect vulnerable semiconductor devices (such as microprocessors and transistors) from high-energy electrical transients, such as those caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) and inductive switching.

The 1N6104 application field and working principle contains a TVS diode, a rectifying junction, and a zener diode. The zener diode provides the voltage reference while the diode provides the protection. The diode is a PN junction diode which is capable of providing both unidirectional and bidirectional protection. The PN junction of the diode is reverse-biased during normal operation. The diode also exhibits a reverse leakage which limits the amount of current which can be passed through the device, thereby preventing over-current damage and protecting the circuit.

Once the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, it will act like a rectifying junction, allowing current to flow in a single direction. This allows the TVS diode to act as a voltage regulator, limiting the voltage to its rated value. The diode can thus serve dual-purposes in the protection circuit, providing voltage regulation and over-voltage protection.
