Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) have been used for many years as a form of surge protection for telecommunications systems and power lines. The 2038-30-SMLF application field and working principle is based on the same fundamental principles as GDTs, but with the application of field-enhanced passivation, high reliability and extremely low leakage current are achievable.The working principle of GDTs begins with the application of a high voltage source that is then contained via an external capacitor. When a pulse greater than the GDT\'s triggering voltage is applied, breakdown of the gas inside the tube occurs. This breakdown, caused by intense ionization of the gas molecules, results in a conductive path between the two electrodes. This can result in thousands of amps of surge current being dissipated or “arrested.”The 2038-30-SMLF employs an external field-enhanced trigger voltage to increase the electric field at the anode interface. This higher electric field boosts the GDT sensitivity to a lower voltage level, thus allowing for the high-voltage source to be replaced by a more practical system design. This has the additional advantage of preventing the need to maintain a constant level of voltage throughout the system. Additionally, the higher voltage inside the tube promotes more efficient ionization and increased electrical breakdown efficiency.Because the 2038-30-SMLF requires only a fraction of the voltage and current, it is extremely useful for telecommunications applications where fast response, low leakage current, and high flow capacities are desired. Additionally, the design eliminates the need for costly and bulky external capacitors for voltage and current reduction. By using the field-enhanced passivation, the 2038-30-SMLF is able to offer increased compliance with of industrial safety standards, providing a higher electrical breakdown energy and insulation resistance.The 2038-30-SMLF also offers more efficient use of energy. As the external fields reduce the triggering voltage requirement, the system is able to use less energy to achieve the breakdown.
