Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arresters are an essential component in power system lightning protection systems, offering reliable, cost-effective surge protection from transient overvoltages commonly encountered in electric utility networks. The 2038-60-SM-RPLF series GDT arrester is a case moulded free-standing device, constructed using environmentally-friendly Halogen-free Polymer matrix material and is designed to protect against transient overvoltages due to lightning, switching operations or other sources of electrical disturbances.

The 2038-60-SM-RPLF is a low-cost 30 kV GDT arrester, providing short-circuit protection against unsolicited surges up to 95 kV. The arrester also has a built-in temperature compensating circuit that prevents it from overheating and prolongs its life under continuous over-stress. The arrester’s symmetric configuration works to minimize voltage gradients, allowing it to handle close-proximity, high-voltage switching operations without the risk of damage.

The 2038-60-SM-RPLF arrester’s main component is its highly durable Zinc Oxide (ZnO) gas discharge tube. This ZnO gas tube is filled with a specialized dielectric gas which acts as an insulating medium, allowing the tube to remain non-conductive until exposed to a surge containing an electrical field higher than that set threshold voltage of the tube (known as the breakdown voltage) – at which point the tube conducts. This process limits the increase of the surge voltage, thereby protecting other equipment from damage.

Other important components of the 2038-60-SM-RPLF include its terminals, which are divided into two sections, the arrester’s high output side and its low side. The low side ground is connected to the earth ground (or a low voltage DC power source), while the high output side is connected to the high voltage power system. The two sides also contain opposite polarity diodes, which serve the purpose of evenly dispersing the induced current through the arrester, thereby ensuring that the current is not concentrated within any one particular diode.

Once the arrester is connected to the power system, it works in nearly the same way for both transient overvoltages and short-circuit protection. When a transient overvoltage occurs, the voltage in the power system rises to a certain level at which point the arrester’s ZnO tube causes it to begin to conduct. This effectively diverts the surge current away from the vulnerable components in the power system and towards the arrester’s terminals, thus reducing the risk of any surge-related damage.

Similarly, when a short-circuit fault occurs, the arrester will cause the voltage in the power system to drop below the arrester’s breakdown voltage at which point the diode starts to conduct and divert the fault current away from the power system components and towards the terminals of the arrester. This process of diverting the current away from the vulnerable components limits any damage due to the short-circuit event.

The 2038-60-SM-RPLF arrester works in tandem with other components in the power system’s lightning protection system to provide reliable, cost-effective surge protection from transient overvoltages and short-circuit faults.
