Incandesent Lamps
Incandescent lamps, or often simply incandescent bulbs, are a type of lighting that comes from electricity, creating luminance from a filament heated by an electric current. The history of this type of lighting can be traced back to England during 1840s, when noted British Chemist Humphrey Davy successfully created the first incandescent electric lamp.
This type of lighting is based on a simple arrangement. The essence of this is that electricity passes through a filament, usually made of the metal tungsten, which is contained within an evacuated glass globe also known affectionately as a bulb or lamp. This causes the metal to heat up and in-turn excites electrons in the metal. The electron excitation produces a short wavelength radiation and as this radiation is visible in the form of light.
In essence, incandescent lamps, because of their relatively low cost and high light output have very quickly become the most popular form of lighting across the world. However, although these lights are used in an extremely wide variety of environments, the largest applications usually involve task-lighting scenarios, such as with the use of medical instruments or within offices, workshops, homes the streets etc. Furthermore, when a white light is required, the addition of a phosphor is added to the glass envelope, thereby enabling the lamp to emit a white light.
Neon Lamps
Neon lamps are electrical devices which were first created in 1912, by a French Scientist by the name of Georges Claude. The lamps are so named because of their tubes, which are made of either naturally occurring, or artificially produced, neon gas.
Neon lamps are based upon an electrical circuit whereby the neon gas is illuminated due to electricity passing through it. It is the resistance of the gas to the current flow, and the low amount of energy required to cause it to be excited that enables the gas to emit light. In essence therefore, a neon lamp consists of a set of electrodes encased within a glass tube that is filled with a low pressure, normally 3-15 Torr, of neon gas and a trace amount of metallic vapors.
The primary difference between neon lamps and incandescent lamps is that the latter requires a filament to be heated in order for it to create luminance, where as neon lamps simply require electricity traveling through the gas in order to illuminate it. Therefore, neon lamps typically tend to have a much longer life than incandescent lamps, with many versions being capable of running 30,000 hours before needing to be replaced.
Due to their extreme longevity, neon lamps are used for a much larger variety of applications than incandescent lamps. As an example, neon lamps are used in advertising campaigns, in traffic junction signaling systems as well as within directions sign boards in the form of the popular neon signs.
