Resistance temperature detectors, or RTDs, are electronic temperature sensors that use a changing electrical resistance property of a metals to measure temperature. RTDs rely on the electrical resistance properties of a certain metal to measure its resistance as it changes in relation to the temperature. RTDs are accurate over wide temperature ranges and can measure temperatures up to 600°C.

Thermistors are temperature sensors that rely on the temperature-dependent change of electrical resistance of certain materials. They are widely used in temperature sensing applications because of their fast response time and low cost. Thermistors are sensitive to temperature changes and can measure temperatures from -55°C to 150°C.

All of these temperature sensors use the same principle of detecting a change in temperature energy to measure the temperature of an environment. Thermocouples and RTDs are the most commonly used types of temperature sensors but thermistors are often used in applications where cost and response time are important. Mechanical thermostats are mainly used to turn on or off systems at a certain temperature or to control temperature over time.
