Reed Relays
Reed relays are used in a variety of applications, such as signal processing, telecommunications, security, control, sensing, switching, automotive, avionics, power distribution and consumer. Essentially, a reed relay consists of a Metal enclosure containing a reed switch as well as several electrical contacts.The reed switch is made up of a hermetically sealed glass tube, housing two thin metal strips called reeds. The reeds are magnetically triggered and tend to remain in the open (unconnected) position until an external magnetic field is applied.
Applications fields of Reed Relays
Reed relays are utilized in many different ways. They\'re commonly used in industrial/commercial, defense, aerospace and automotive industries, to name a few. They\'re employed for a variety of purposes, including digital signal processing, telecommunications, security, control, sensing, switching and consumer applications. When it comes to switching, reed relays are often played in the control of low voltage, low current circuits, where contact resistance is kept to a minimum and a high resistance to environment exposure is desirable.
Reed relays can also be used for applications where reliability is the major requirement. This is due to their simplicity, small size, low contact resistance and excellent life performance. Working Principle of Reed Relays
Reed relays work on the principle of induction. When electricity is applied to the base winding of the relay, it creates an electromagnetic field, which attracts the contact fingers and causes them to make contact. The contact fingers remain closed as long as the current is applied. As soon as the current is removed, the electromagnetic field collapses, allowing the contact fingers to return to the open position. This allows the reed relay to switch on and off very quickly.
Once the reed relay is switched on, the contact fingers remain in position and the contact resistance stays relatively low. This is advantageous when controlling low voltage, low current circuits, since no additional power is required to maintain contact.
