Reed Relays
A reed relay is an electrical device used to control a circuit by using an electromagnet. It is made up of a reed switch, which is held open, and an externally mounted, energized coil. When electricity is applied to the coil, the switch is closed and the circuit is completed, thus allowing the current to flow. When the current is no longer applied, the switch re-opens and the circuit is broken again.

Reed relays are widely used in many applications, from small microprocessors in digital watches to large-scale industrial systems and from home appliances to computers. The main advantage of reed relays is their small size. They are much smaller than conventional relays and can be mounted on almost any surface. Additionally, unlike many other types of relays, reed relays do not require external springs or levers to actuate the contacts, resulting in a much simpler design and lower production cost.
Reed relays also offer a relatively low contact resistance and can switch speeds of up to several hundred Hertz. This makes them ideal for use in applications requiring a rapid switch response such as in high speed data acquisition or control systems. Additionally, reed relays can be used in low voltage applications as they are capable of handling signals as low as 100 mV.
In addition to their compact size, reed relays are also more reliable than many other types of electrical relays as their contacts are not subject to mechanical wear and tear. Also, reed relays offer excellent long-term stability due to their hermetically sealed construction and their hermetically welded contacts.
Overall, reed relays offer a relatively low power consumption and are suitable for a wide range of applications due to their small size and switch speed. They are usually less expensive than conventional relays and offer lower contact resistance. Additionally, their hermetically sealed construction provides superior long-term reliability.
