LED Lighting - COBs, Engines, Modules

Light emitting diode (LED) lighting technology is an increasingly important component of LED lighting solutions. LED lighting products are available in a variety of shapes and sizes marketed under the names of chips-on-board (COBs), engines, and modules. This article will discuss the characteristics of these products, their application fields and the principles behind their working. COBs are basically arrays of LEDs placed on a single substrate or circuit board. Due to their higher power, they are mostly used in high-intensity applications that require a lot of lumens such as vehicle headlights, flashlights, and streetlights. On the other hand, LED engines and modules are smaller and thus are mainly used in accent lighting and task lighting. What sets COBs apart from engines and modules is the fact that they can be driven at a higher current and can therefore attain a higher lumen output. However, the difference lies in the fact that in COBs, the current is supplied to multiple LED chips at the same time, whereas in engines and modules, it is supplied to just one LED chip at a time. In conclusion, LED lighting solutions can be broadly classified as COBs, engines and modules, based on their sizes and power levels. Though all of them are based on the same principle of electroluminescence, their characteristics and application fields are quite different.
