Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrochemical capacitors with high capacitance. The electrolytic capacitor is composed of two electrodes, namely the anode and the cathode, separated by an electrolyte, also known as a dielectric. It uses an electrolyte filled with a metal lose its electrons, or an oxidized metal, to form a capacitor-like structure. In most cases, this metal is aluminium, although other metals or combinations of metals are also used. The anode is usually made of aluminium foil coated with an oxide layer, which acts as the dielectric. The cathode is usually made of aluminium foil cladded with an oxidized metal, which acts as the electrode material. Although the electrolyte used in aluminum electrolytic capacitors does not have high-energy storage capability, it does provide the necessary electrostatic field for charge exchange.
