BMA120 accelerometer is a highly sophisticated and integrated device for measuring acceleration, the 3rd linear motion direction in addition to x- and y-direction. It is capable of measuring acceleration in the range of 20g peak and can provide digital output to the user. BMA120 accelerometer is widely used in variety of applications – high precision tilt measurement, vibration measurement, motion event detection, and image stabilization as well as automotive applications such as airbag deployment and ESP.
Applications of BMA120 Accelerometer
One of the main applications for BMA120 accelerometer is tilt measurement. Those accelerometers can measure the tilt angle of the device on which it is mounted accurately. It can also measure the inclination of objects which are very difficult to measure using normal inclinometers or tilt switches. This is very useful for applications such as vehicle navigation, remote monitoring of slope angle and in robotic arms.
BMA120 accelerometer can also be used for vibration measurement. It can be used to measure the vibration frequencies and amplitudes. It can also be used for troubleshooting and analysis of machinery and equipment. This is very helpful in aircraft and aerospace measurement applications.

Working Principle of BMA120 Accelerometer
The BMA120 accelerometer is based on a principle called capacitive micromechanics. This can be best explained through an example. Consider a parallel plate capacitor which consists of two plates of metal kept closer together. When a force is applied, the distance between two plates is slightly changed which causes a change in capacitance. The principle is similar with the BMA120 accelerometer.
The sensing element of the BMA120 accelerometer consists of a proof mass which is suspended between two electrodes. When an acceleration is applied, the proof mass is displaced due to the action of the acceleration. This displacement causes a change in the capacitance between the electrodes which is detected and converted into an analog signal. This analog signal is further processed to provide the user with digital output.
The BMA120 accelerometer offers high accuracy and fast response time which makes it suitable for various detection and measurement applications. It is available in a compact form factor and operates on very low power consumption thereby making it ideal for various industrial, consumer and automotive applications.
