Application Field
The BZX55C62-TAP Zener diode is designed especially as transient voltage suppressors. It can be used to clamp in the circuit that needs overvoltage protection, such as integrated circuits and cable lines. This application field includes the power distribution system, power supply, communication system,railway signal control, electronic measuring and instruments, LED lighting and LED displays.
Working Principle
The BZX55C62-TAP Zener diode works on semi-conductor based reverse biased technology. It consists of a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor sandwich. Applying a positive voltage to the P-type semiconductor and a negative voltage to the N-type semiconductor causes reverse bias conditions to be created in the junction between them. The energy gap between the P and N-type materials is responsible for the breakdown voltage of the diode and if the applied voltages exceed this gap then the current will flow. This offers protection for circuit elements from transient over-voltages, as the diode provides a ‘clamping’ action to limit potential damage. Furthermore, Zener reference diodes are available that are used as a precise voltage reference, as they exhibit a very precise and stable reverse breakdown voltage.
