Thyristors - TRIACs are components widely used in industrial electronics, and CTA16-1200BW is a common type of this type of device. A TRIAC is a three-terminal semiconductor device which consists of three layers of P- and N-type material, arranged to form two p-n junctions, as indicated in Figure 1. It is used for controlling current in both directions. The operation and working principle of a TRIAC can be divided into three stages: Turn-On, Conduction and Turn-Off Stage.
Turn-On Stage: Initially the gate terminal (G) is at a low voltage and no current flows through it. When a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, it creates a “gate current” which triggers the device to turn on thereby allowing current to flow through the device. This gate current is usually very small, typically in the region of micro-amperes. This current is sufficient to cause the device to turn on and allow a subsequent large current to flow through it.
Conduction Stage: Once the device has been triggered and an applied voltage causes the device to turn on, current flows in both directions through the device. The amount of current that can flow through the device is limited by the device’s current rating. The current goes from the Anode to the Cathode and then back again. As the current through the device increases, the voltage drop across the device increases reducing the voltage available to the gate. This helps to keep the current limited to the device’s rating.
Turn-Off Stage: The turn-off stage of the device is triggered by either reducing the voltage applied to the gate terminal or by reducing the current through it. When the gate voltage becomes low enough, the current through the device falls to zero and the device turns off. This is usually referred to as ‘latching out’ of the device.
CTA16-1200BW is a four-terminal, zero-voltage, high-power TRIAC type, with all four terminals being connected to the three layers of P- and N-type materials. The anode and gated anode are connected to the common anode and the gated anode gate connection. When the gate is triggered, current flow is allowed in both directions through the two P- and N-type layers. This device can be used in motors and compressors, as well as in a variety of other applications such as light dimmers, electric heaters and other AC circuits.
CTA16-1200BW is commonly used as a motor speed control, AC dimmer, and other AC control applications. It has a minimum on-state voltage of 1100 volts and a current rating of 16 amps. It is rated for a static dissipation of 400 watts, and a storage temperature range of -55°C to +175°C. The device is capable of working under both AC and DC operating conditions and is available in TO-92 and TO-220 packages.
