DS2781G+ is a battery monitoring integrated circuit (IC) in the category of Power Management ICs (PMIC) - Battery Management. The chip offers integrated temperature compensation and a six wire measurement, making it ideal for single cell Li-Ion battery capacity measurement in portable applications, such as autonomous and remote monitoring.
The DS2781G+ is an improved version of the DS2781 with characteristics such as improved fuel gauge accuracy and expanded battery capacity range. It offers an integrated fuel gauge function for monitoring a single cell battery and provides an alarm indication and output for low battery voltage. The chip also features temperature compensation for more accurate measurement, error protection for data resolution and protection against cell imbalance.
The chip is designed to work with a variety of battery chemistries, such as Li-Ion, Li-Polymer, NMC, and NiMH. It also supports several charging sources, including USB, or AC wall adapters. This makes it ideal for high-end mobile phones, wireless speakers, headsets and smart watches, providing the most accurate reading of battery status under various charge and discharge conditions.
The DS2781G+ is operated with 2.7-5.5V DC voltage supply and provides a 7-bit I2C/SMBus serial interface while it has an open-drain alarm output. It measures battery temperature, current, charge and lifetime along with battery heat resistance, power loss and user-defined settings. The chip provides reliable battery capacity results by using a patented chemical learning algorithm, delivering excellent linearity and battery capacity estimate.
The chemical learning algorithm referred to as the Galvanostatic Learn Algorithm (GLA) takes measurements from the full-charge and discharge cycles of the battery and integrates them over time. With each cycle, the algorithm refines its estimate of the battery health and capacity, and adjusts its output to reflect the most accurate result. The algorithm also accounts for aging effects on a battery cell and compensates for them to ensure the accurate capacity measurements. Additionally, a segmented Coulomb counting feature is offered to achieve sub-micro-amp accuracy over battery discharge and charge cycles.
The battery monitoring IC is embedded with the proprietary Software Development Kit (SDK), allowing developers to personalize and customize settings to best suit their application. This includes customizable voltage measurements, compensation parameters, alarm decisions, and learning parameters such as current, voltage, and temperature. It also includes access to the battery charging data such as interrupt requests, quick disconnect, and low battery adapter. This can be used to develop user-defined automatic charging termination.
The DS2781G+ is operational over the temperature range of -30°C to 85°C, and features no standby current. It offers extended battery life management with low power consumption and efficient power conversion from input (charging sources) to output (device), along with its highly accurate measurement capabilities. It ensures longer lasting battery performance and increased safety through a safety-based approach to battery management.
