An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of two aluminum foils, a separator paper, and an electrolyte. The aluminum foil of the anode is coated with a layer of oxide by anodizing. The anodizing forms a much insulator layer that holds the electrolyte. The paper separator keeps the two foils apart and prevents them from short-circuiting. The electrolyte acts as an ion bridge to allow the capacitance of thefoils. When the capacitor is charged, positive ions from the electrolyte flow to the anode while negative ions flow to the cathode. As a result, electric charges of the same polarity are attracted on to the opposite aluminumfoils and form an electric field. This electric field creates capacitance between the anode and cathode foils and can store electrical charge.
