Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor constructed out of two aluminum foil electrodes which are separated by a layer of insulating material called the separator. This separator is typically made of materials such as paper or plastic and is saturated with an electrolyte composed of an organic solvent with dissolved salts. The aluminum foil electrodes contain a layer of aluminum oxide, which acts as an electrolyte, and allows the capacitor to store electrical charge.
