Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, like other electrochemical capacitors, require an electrolyte. Generally, air is not a good electrolyte and must be replaced with something else to transfer charge carriers between the two plates of a capacitor. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors use an electrolyte composed of a mixture of aqueous solvent (water) and a charged species (usually an acid) to keep the two plates of the capacitor electrically charged.
