Working principle: An electrolytic capacitor in general is composed of two metal plates, one is a thin aluminum foil with a thin oxide layer formed on its surface (anode). The oxide layer on the anode acts as a dielectric by allowing electric current to flow from one plate to the other. When an electric potential is applied across the plates, the positive charge carriers migrate to the negative plate and negative carriers migrate to the positive plate, building up an electric field, resulting in plate polarization.
The behavior of the electrolytic capacitor depends on the type of electrolyte used. It can be a liquid, solid polymer, manganese oxide, or a foam-like metal oxidide layer.
