EPM7064AEFC100-7N application field and working principle

EPM7064AEFC100-7N is a complex programmable logic device (CPLD) developed by Altera Corporation and is applicable for many different embedded systems. It is a low-power, high-performance, low-density device for use in a variety of digital signal processing and power control applications. This CPLD is based on Altera\'s Antifuse technology and occupies only a small area on the printed circuit board (PCB), and is designed for applications requiring up to 9,182 usable logic elements (LEs).

The EPM7064AEFC100-7N is specifically designed for high-speed, low-power signal processing applications, such as audio and video A/D and D/A, motor speed control and remote control. The device features three 84- or 168-bit macro cells, nine I/O banks, and an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) with 30 single-cycle operations and four I/O registers. The device also includes a nonvolatile flash memory, a watchdog timer, and hardware-programmable logic elements (PLEs) which can be used to implement any type of sequential state machine.

The on-chip EPM7064AEFC100-7N ALU is powered by a 16-bit accumulator and 8-bit program counter. The memory architecture is based on a 16-bit data bus, 32-bit write enable/data/address bus and an 8-bit data multiplexer. The device can be coupled with another Altera device to form an ASIC complex. It supports three-state logic and four input/output instructions. Its power consumption is very low and it is available in plastic and ceramic packaging.

In terms of the working principle, the EPM7064AEFC100-7N CPLD is based on antifuse technology. The device works by using permanently programmable metal-oxide antifuses to create a permanent connection between two adjacent metal layers. The antifuses can also be programmed to create a non-volatile field of logic elements by linking two adjacent "inputs" and "outputs". Once the programming instructions are written, the logic elements are permanently set, allowing the device to operate at much higher speeds than a typical logic gate.
