FFC (Flat Flexible Cable) or FPC (Flexible Printed Cable) connectors are small, light-weight connectors for use in tight spaces where a conventional wire connection would be too bulky or difficult to use. In order to provide electrical and mechanical connections between two printed circuit boards (PCBs) or other electronic components, the connectors use flexible printed circuit cables, which are thin flat wires that are individually insulated, arranged in parallel to create a flat cable. The connectors are designed to reduce the number of individual wires or connections required for a given application and to provide a cost-effective solution for board-to-board interconnects in a range of applications.

FFC/FPC connectors are mainly used in the automotive, telecom, consumer electronic, medical and industrial markets, as they are well suited for connecting small electric components to circuit boards, such as in micro-interfaces, single-in-line (SIL) connectors, logic input/output (I/O) connectors, and keyboard connectors. The connectors are also used in many other applications where flexibility and/or small size is required.

When FFC/FPC connectors are used, the conductors of the flat flexible cable are held in place by two or more contacts. Each contact is designed to fit into its respective mating contact and is usually secured by means of a pressure clip, snap-in or snap-on mechanism. The contacts are typically made from tin-plated copper alloy, and are generally available in a variety of sizes and contact options, such as surface mount, solder tail, zero insertion force (ZIF) and straight-through. Some connectors are also available with integrated grounding clips, which help to ensure that all of the conductors are securely insulated.

The working principle of an FFC/FPC connector is quite simple. When the cables are inserted into the mating metal contacts, the contact terminals form a mechanical and electrical connection between the components and the board. The contacts are designed to ensure low contact resistance and are also capable of withstanding a certain amount of vibration and shock, making them ideal for use in harsh environments. The contact terminals also provide strain relief for the cables, helping to ensure that they are properly secured and are not damaged during operation.

FFC/FPC connectors provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for connecting electronic components. Their small size and ease of integration make them an attractive solution for a wide variety of applications, and their reliable performance makes them suitable for use in a variety of harsh environments. Furthermore, they provide an ideal solution for applications that require flexibility and a small footprint in order to save on space and reduce assembly costs. As such, FFC/FPC connectors are becoming increasingly popular in many different types of applications.
