Isolators - Gate Drivers
FOD8334 is an isolation gate driver for half-bridge applications in power electronics. It is designed to provide galvanic isolation between the high-side and low-side drivers of a bridge. This IC features an integrated half-bridge, low on-resistance, high-speed optocoupler with reinforced isolation, adjustable shoot-through protection, common mode noise at the output, overvoltage protection and overcurrent protection.Application Field of FOD8334
The FOD8334 gate driver is intended for use in low voltage, low current switching applications. The control ports of the driver are designed to accept standard logic signals such as TTL, LVTTL or 3.3V logic levels. The output is designed to drive half bridge applications. These applications include low voltage, low current switching of DC motors, reversible drives, stepper motors, HVAC drives, fans, solenoids, pumps and valves. In addition, the FOD8334 has been designed to improve the reliability and system robustness when used in applications such as industrial and energy meters, test and measurement instruments, medical systems, renewable energy systems, and automotive systems.Working Principle of FOD8334
The working principle of FOD8334 is based on optocouplers. The internal circuit of the driver is made up of two half bridges connected back-to-back to form a full bridge. The drive signals from the two sides of the bridge are connected to high-speed optocouplers, which provide the desired isolation between them. The control logic inputs to the driver are provided with a logic level signal. The input signals are translated by optocouplers to the required logic state at the outputs, ensuring complete insulation between the inputs and the outputs of the FOD8334 circuit.When the input signal is high, the left transistor of the half bridge is switched on and the right is switched off. When the input signal is low, the left transistor of the half bridge is switched off and the right is switched on. This action creates the current flow through the half bridge as determined by the control signal. This action is controlled by the shoot-through protection feature of the FOD8334 which ensures that the transistors never turn on/off at the same time.The integrated over-voltage and over-current protection features ensure the FOD8334 remains protected even under extreme conditions. In case of an over-voltage condition, the FOD8334 will turn off both transistors of the half bridge and latch in this state until the voltage has dropped below its protection threshold.Finally, the FOD8334 has an integrated common-mode noise filter which reduces noise from the output and improves system performance.Conclusion
