Digital Isolators are electronic circuits that provide isolation between circuits, eliminating hazardous ground and power looping issues. Isolation is achieved through the use of semiconductor technology and offers galvanic isolation, low-frequency filtering, high-frequency noise filtering, and RF frequency noise cancellation. An increasing application field is with semiconductor applications, where a target electrical component is to be isolated from its environment for reasons of safety or to prevent interference. The IL3122-3E isolation circuit is specially designed for these applications. It employs a CMOS-Based 3-Channel Isolation Barrier with high temporal accuracy, wide input/output isolation voltage, and low conduction losses. The IL3122-3E offers a broad range of signal-level conversion, from high-speed line drivers (up to 500Mbaud) to low-speed signal isolation for digital logic signals (30V/us).The device consists of a pair of identical but isolated circuitry components, connected to each other by a single core transformer. The input side is the power supply and logic input signal-carrying (DIN) side, while the output side contains the power supply and logic output (DOUT) signal-carrying side. Both of these sides feature isolated galvanic barriers that prevent any current or voltage interference from one to another. This digital isolator can very effectively protect external circuits, such as microcontrollers, against transient voltages, power spikes, and electromagnetic interference. The input and output side can operate at different voltages, enabling the use of voltage translation between the two sides. A series of clamping elements on each side of the isolator provide protection against overvoltage. In terms of working principle, the digital isolator uses ICs (Integrated Circuits) to drive a transformer with two identical cores. Each side of the transformer is connected to its respective input and output signals. A pair of digital logic signals is transferred from one side of the transformer to the other, without any direct electrical path.The isolator\'s transformer provides galvanic isolation from power-source, signal-source, and logic-level signals. This allows for protection from sustained power and high frequency noise. The transformer also provides built-in impedance matching, improved signal fidelity, and reduction of EMI/RFI noise.The IL3122-3E is ideal for use in a wide variety of isolation-requiring applications, including medical equipment, power supplies, industrial equipment, and automation systems. The device can also be employed for any situation where transient voltages, power spikes, or EMI/RFI are an issue. It offers high input/output isolation, high temporal accuracy, low power consumption, and low cost making it an effective, efficient, and economical solution.
