It is a so-called two-terminal, silicon pn+ junction with a highly doped p-type region and a lightly doped n+ type region acting as the junction. Voltage is applied across the terminals when it is forward biased, creating a very low forward voltage drop. In the opposite direction, when the voltage is reversed, the diode starts to operate as a Zener diode, allowing the voltage potential to remain constant across the terminals at its Zener voltage, regardless of the input voltage.
