The LM317LZX is one of the modern Voltage Regulators designed to regulate the output voltage of the DC power supply of any mobile communications, automotive, consumer and industrial equipment. With its very low quiescent current and immensely low dropout voltage, the LM317LZX regulator can easily be used for battery-operated applications and for other space-limited circuits.This Voltage Regulator is a three-terminal adjustable regulator from National Semiconductor. It is an adjustable version of the well-known LM317 linear voltage regulator. The LM317LZX has the ability to provide an output voltage spectrum ranging from 1.2V to 37V with a maximum current rating of 1.5 Amps. It also has a fixed output voltage of 3.0V, 5.0V and 12V.Features of the LM317LZX Regulator
The LM317LZX Voltage Regulator has many features which make it an excellent choice for powering microelectronic devices. Its salient features include:• High Efficiency: with a maximum efficiency rating of 90%, the LM317LZX can provide efficient and reliable power.• Ultra-Low Quiescent Current: the LM317LZX regulator can keep the quiescent current to less than 1 milliamp (mA), making it ideal for battery-powered applications.• Low Dropout Voltage: The LM317LZX has the ability to efficiently provide low dropout voltages of up to 1.2V.• Wide Output Voltage Range: It can provide a wide output voltage spectrum ranging from 1.2V to 37V.• Thermal Protection: Its on-chip circuitry facilitates thermal protection, thus preventing the regulator from being damaged due to the excessive heat generated by the other components.Working Principle of the LM317LZX
The LM317LZX regulator’s working principle can be divided into two parts. The first part is the feedback circuit and the second part is the output stage.In the first part, the input voltage is applied to the LM317LZX regulator through the Input/Adj terminals. The internal feedback network adjusts this input voltage according to the user’s desired output voltage. This is then sent to the output stage.In the output stage, the output voltage is generated by a combination of an error amplifier and a pass transistor. The error amplifier compares the output voltage with a reference voltage of 1.25V, and adjusts the transistor’s output current accordingly. This output current is then passed through an output transistor which produces the regulated output voltage.Applications of LM317LZX Voltage Regulator
