The LM431BIM is a specialized IC designed for use as a voltage reference in a wide range of circuit applications. It is a precision monolithic two-terminal voltage reference device, operating from a single +2.5V to +18V supply. Its low voltage operation also makes it an ideal choice for applications that require efficient voltage regulation.The LM431BIM operates by setting a voltage reference at a fixed point by setting a certain bias current that is passed through the LM431BIM pin 1. This bias current is usually set to a level of 20mA. The output voltage is then set so that the reference voltage (VREF = 2.495V) at pin 1 is not exceeded, and is internally limited to ensure that it does not go below 2.494V.When the voltage reference on the LM431BIM pin 1 reaches or exceeds the reference voltage, the LM431BIM is triggered and a proportionate change is seen in the output voltage. This change is usually in the range of 0.02V to 0.06V. The output voltage can also be adjusted, allowing the user to fine-tune the values of the reference voltage. The LM431BIM also includes an integrated temperature sensor which can be used to adjust the output voltage automatically, if needed. This makes the device even more useful in applications, such as thermocouple compensation, where temperature changes could affect the performance of the system.The LM431BIM is also highly reliable, due to its robust manufacturing process and low temperature co-fired ceramic support. It is available in multiple packages, including a 3-pin SOT package, as well as a 2.3mm x 1.7mm DFN package, which makes it an ideal choice for applications where space is a concern.
