The LT1308IS8#PBF belongs to the family of DC/DC switching regulators, in the category of PMIC (Power Management IC) and Voltage Regulators. It offers an analog approach to step-down switching, providing the user with good performance and a wide input voltage range. Compared with its popular cousin, the LT1308EMSE#PBF, this version boasts slightly higher maximum efficiency (98% vs. 95%), a lower quiescent current (260µA vs. 375µA) and a higher junction temperature rating (150°C vs. 105°C).
In its basic guise, the LT1308IS8#PBF offers a one-way step-down conversion from 28V to 5V and plays the role of a simple buck converter. Its output voltage can be finely adjusted with a positive voltage applied to the ADJ pin, ranging from 5V up to a maximum of 40V. This capability makes the LT1308IS8#PBF ideal for use in a broad range of applications such as automotive, industrial and medical.
At the heart of this DC/DC switching regulator lies a quasi-resonant control circuit and high-side MOSFET. The quasi-resonant control allows efficient operation and improved electromagnetic compatibility. In addition, its light load efficiency is improved due to a cycle-by-cycle current limit circuit, which is especially useful when operating at very light loads. Finally, the protection features, such as over-voltage, thermal and current protections, help prevent device or system failures.
Sprinkled across the device, one can find a couple of useful features. For example, a programmable soft-start (SS) pin to adjust the rate at which the device\'s output ramps up post power up. Also, an enable pin (EN) allows the user to put the regulator in standby mode, reducing the quiescent current by more than 50%. This pin, along with the SS pin, can be used to synchronize the device, when multiple units are used in parallel.
The synchronous rectification also plays an important role in improving efficiency by reducing losses due to the body diode. Additionally, the lower vibrating losses of the synchronous rectification minimizes device ringing performances, making the device suitable for harsh EMI environments. The LT1308IS8#PBF also offers the user with a programmable frequency compensation with the use of an external resistor connected to the RT/CT pin.
Finally, some of the other noteworthy features include a 1.8V logic level supply, an internal startup period timer, a current limit protection circuit, an adjustable protection delay, a serial enable/disable control, an output voltage regulation and a four-pin kelvin sense option.
