The LTC1760IFW is a complete lithium-ion battery charging solution, advanced battery management IC that significantly reduces the size of the charge circuitry and design efforts associated with solving the requirements of charging multi-series stacked Li-ion/ Li-polymer batteries. The LTC1760IFW offers a wide direct input voltage range, programmable fast-charge current and a complete range of high-accuracy protection parameters. The LTC1760IFW is a fully integrated single-package solution, designed to minimize timing inaccuracies that can occur in traditional analog implementations.
The LTC1760IFW is part of the PMIC - Battery Chargers family, providing reliable charging solutions for Li-ion/ Li-polymer batteries used in portable and handheld applications. It can be used as a standalone charger for single-cell Li-ion batteries, or as a buck-boost charger for up to 8-cell series stacks. It is compatible with any type of Li-ion/ Li-polymer Battery, including IMR, GFX, IRMB, LiFePO4 and more. The LTC1760IFW provides a complete set of features, including adjustable fast-charge current and termination current, safety timer, battery temperature monitoring and voltage/current feedback by means of an external ADC / DAC.
The LTC1760IFW operates in two distinct modes: the fast-charge mode, which is used for the bulk of the charging cycle, and the topping-off mode, used for charging the last few percent or milliamp-hours remaining in the battery. The fast-charge mode operates as either a buck or boost converter, depending on whether the input voltage or the voltage of the battery stack is higher. The current limit is adjustable from 0.1 A to 2 A. The topping-off mode is enabled when the battery stack reaches the pre-programmed voltage threshold and the fast-charge current drops below the programmed topping-off threshold. The top-off current can be programmed from 0.1 A to 0.5 A.
The LTC1760IFW also features a variety of safety features, designed to protect the battery stack and the connected system module. These include overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent protection. A temperature monitor is also included, and can be used to terminate the charging process when the temperature of the battery cells exceeds an adjustable threshold. Additionally, a safety timer is included, which will automatically disable the charger if the charging process exceeds a user-defined timeout.
The LTC1760IFW utilizes a high performance microcontroller to regulate the charging process. The system module includes the microcontroller, power management, analog and digital input signals, and the output signals. The microcontroller will take the input signals from the system controller, measure the voltage and current of the battery, and control the output signals to the power stage to maintain the selected charging parameters. This allows for very low ripple current, resulting in a much faster charging process.
