Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)

The LTC2164IUK#TRPBF is a 16-bit, 4-channel successive-approximation ADC designed for use in data acquisition applications. The device features an integrated sampling capacitor and a low-drift, high-impedance op amp. The LTC2164IUK#TRPBF provides 250 kSPS sampling rate, excellent linearity (7LSB max INL) and high speed (4.5µs conversion time). It utilizes an on-chip voltage regulator that allows single 8V to 18V operation. An analog power converter allows operation with up to 30V input range.The device is well suited for applications in industrial, medical and consumer markets including: energy monitoring, DC motor control, automotive and aerospace systems, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, data storage systems, and smart meters.The main component of the LTC2164IUK#TRPBF is the differential 20-bit SAR (successive approximation register) ADC. The SAR architecture uses two successive steps to convert the analog input voltage to a digital output code. The first step is a sampling stage where the differential input voltage is sampled and held on an internal sampling capacitor. The sample is then passed to an integrator which generates a replica of the input voltage at the output.The second step is a series of comparator cycles which detect and register each bit of the output code. The comparator cycles are repetitively carried out until all 16 output bits are registered. This SAR ADC architecture is high speed and has low power consumption while maintaining high accuracy.The device includes an adjustable gain amplifier which amplifies the differential input signal. The gain of the amplifier can be adjusted via software or external pins. The LTC2164IUK#TRPBF also features internal programmable reference buffers to set the converter reference voltage. The internal programmable reference is applied to the upper and lower reference inputs of the internal opamp.The device operates from an internal voltage reference of 2.5 V, which has an accuracy of ±0.4% and a drift of 3ppm/°C. The device also features an on-board temperature sensor which can be read via a two-wire serial interface.
