Designed for the safety and efficiency needs of consumer and wearables applications, the device combines an easy-to-use programmable charger, watchdog timer and voltage monitor for Li-ion cells with integrated short-circuit, over temperature, overcharge and reverse-charge protection. Utilizing popular USB wall adapters and subject to a wide array of systems, the LTC4121IUD-4.2 also features low stand-by current, a variety of safety features, and SmartSwitch™ automatic shutdown capability.The LTC4121IUD-4.2 is part of the PMIC - Battery Chargers family. The LTC4121IUD-4.2 helps to extend the life of Li-ion cells in consumer and wearable devices by providing efficient charging, monitoring and protection. The device helps to reduce design complexity, minimize board space and optimize battery system cost by combining key features of an easy-to-use programmable charger, watchdog timer, and voltage monitor with short-circuit, over temperature, overcharge and reverse-charge protection.Application FieldThe LTC4121IUD-4.2 is suitable for a range of applications such as handheld devices, cell phones, cameras, portable media players, Bluetooth® headsets, hearing aids, remote controls, and e-bikes. The LTC4121IUD-4.2 offers a maximum charge current of 1.04A and a maximum USB input current of 2A, enabling it to meet the needs of larger battery systems such as tablet computers, medical devices, and prosthetics.Working PrinciplesThe LTC4121IUD-4.2 has two operation modes. In the automated mode, LED1 is inactive and LED2 is active, indicating that the user is in control of charging. In the manual mode, LED2 is inactive and LED1 is active, indicating that the device is in control of the charge current. The device is programmed via a digital I2C interface that supports single-byte write and read commands.The LTC4121IUD-4.2 can charge any number of Li-ion cells, provided the total voltage of the cells does not exceed the maximum cell voltage. The device can be programmed for different settings such as the charge current, charge voltage, LED brightness, and watchdog timer settings. The device also has built-in over voltage, over temperature, overcharge, and reverse-charge protection.The device also features a SmartSwitch™ capability. This allows the user to reduce quiescent current on the order of micro-amps when the load current falls below a preset threshold. This ensures efficient power consumption when the device is in standby mode. Moreover, the device can be configured to enter sleep mode after a preset duration of inactivity.The LTC4121IUD-4.2 is designed to optimize the charge performance and battery life cycle of lithium-ion chemistry batteries. The device uses a state-of-the-art charge algorithm to ensure maximum charge performance and battery cell longevity. The LTC4121IUD-4.2 also features dedicated circuits and protection settings for fast and reliable charging performance in harsh environment conditions.
