DC DC Converters: LTM4633EY#PBF Application Field and Working Principle

DC-DC converters are electronic devices used to convert Direct Current from one voltage level to another. They are frequently used in applications where the gain, or transformation, from one voltage level to another is desired. A common example is in the power management of mobile and portable electronic devices, where a device’s main battery is typically charged using a Secondary Battery at a different voltage level. The DC DC Converter is used to step down the supply voltage to the required level. A good example of such a DC DC converter is Linear Technology Corporation’s LTM4633EY#PBF (hereafter referred to as the LTM4633).The LTM4633 is a two-phase synchronous step-down converter with 4.5A maximum load current. It operates from an input voltage range of 3.2V to 18V and can provide an output voltage from 0.6V to 5V. The LTM4633 features a combination of high efficiency, excellent light load efficiency and low quiescent current, making it ideal for a variety of applications including cellular phones, industrial systems and battery powered consumer electronics. The LTM4633 also features a variety of control, protection and diagnostic features including integrated over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature protection.The LTM4633 is capable of operating in one of three different modes, depending on the application needs:
  • Pulse-Skip Mode: Pulse-Skip mode allows the converter to modulate its output while maintaining a constant switching frequency. This helps maximiSe efficiency at light loads.
  • Pulse-Width Modulation Mode (PWM): In PWM mode, the LTM4633 is able to modulate its output power by varying the duty cycle of the output current. This mode offers the greatest efficiency, especially at higher loads. The frequency of the output current can also be adjusted based on the application requirements.
  • Voltage Mode Control: In Voltage Mode Control, the output voltage is kept constant regardless of the load change. This mode is suitable for high-load applications and ensures no jitter or spikes on the output voltage, which could otherwise cause damage to the load.
The working principle of the LTM4633 is based on the use of a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal, which is used to control the switching of the two internal power stages. The PWM signal is generated by a dedicated control circuit, which in turn is driven by the output voltage feedback.The switching of the power stages is regulated by two transistors which act as switches, driving current across the inductors. When one of the transistors is switched on, a current flows through the inductor and stores energy. When it is switched off, the stored energy is released into the output. The current across the inductor is then switched between the two transistors, enabling the power stage to keep the output voltage in check.The device also features a low-power Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) operation, which is used in light-load applications. In PFM, the two power stages are only switched on periodically to provide a controlled, low-power output.In conclusion, the LTM4633 is an advanced DC-DC converter designed for applications requiring step-down voltage conversion from 3.2V to 18V.
