A tantalum capacitor, also known as a tantalum electrolytic capacitor, is an electronic component composed of two conducting plates separated by an electrolyte made of Tantalum. The plates can be of any shape, but are usually rectangular. It is used to store electrical energy in an electrical field. In the M39003/01-2791/TR, the current causes an electrochemical reaction between the electrolyte and the MnO₂-dielectric element, depositing an insulating material of MnO₂ onto the surfaces of the successive plates of the capacitor. As the applied voltage increases, the deposited MnO₂ increases in thickness, forming a thicker insulating layer between the plates. This layer prevents further current flow, thus increasing the capacitance as the applied voltage increases.

The M39003/01-2791/TR is available in capacitance values ranging from 0.47µF to 22µF, at capacitance tolerances of ±1, ±2 and ±20%. It has a rated voltage ranging from 4V to 25V and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. It has a maximum leakage current of 0.03CV (µA), where C is the capacitance of the device in µF, and a maximum dissipation factor of 10%. It also features a long shelf-life due to its low capacitance tolerance drift and the absence of any long-term drift in capacitance with time.
