Working Principle

A tantalum capacitor is essentially a two-terminal device consisting of a tantalum powder anode, held together with a conductive epoxy gel to form a “pellet”. This pellet then is coated with a layer of microporous insulating material and then further coated with a layer of tantalum oxide. This whole structure is then encapsulated in a metal can with electrolytic grade manganese dioxide filling the can. Electrodes of this capacitor are connected externally to the manganese dioxide inside the can.When a voltage is applied to the electrodes of the capacitor, electrolytic ions diffuse from the manganese dioxide electrode and are attracted to the tantalum oxide anode. This creates a porous layer of tantalum pentoxide with an extremely large surface area and thus a high capacitance. The theoretical capacitance of the tantalum capacitor is determined by the equation:C = {tantalum capacitor capacitance} * [(surface area of tantalum anode)/(surface area of tantalum pentoxide anode)]This high capacitance is the result of the high surface area that is created by the diffusion and attractions of the electrolytic ions.
