Tantalum capacitors, also called tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are a form of electrolytic capacitor. These solid, polarized devices have very high capacitance and are characterized by low leakage current, long life, and high dielectric strength. M39003/03-0476/HSD is one of the various types of tantalum capacitors available, and this article will explain the application field as well as the working principle of this capacitor.

M39003/03-0476/HSD tantalum capacitors are mainly used in military and aerospace applications. Working Principle

The M39003/03-0476/HSD is a tantalum capacitor with 4-pin termination, in which a variety of anodic oxide layers are formed on its surface for use in high-temperature applications. Its construction consists of a tantalum pellet as one of the electrodes, an electrolytic solid conductor (typically based on manganese dioxide) as the other electrode, and a dielectric layer in between. This dielectric layer is a combination of anodic oxides and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5). The pellets and the solid conductor are sealed in the anodic oxide coating so that the electrical connection between these two elements is maintained. The anodic oxide coating also protects the device from the environment.

As with all capacitors, M39003/03-0476/HSD works on the principle of electrostatic charge storage. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor terminals, a current starts flowing through the capacitor (if the voltage is DC). This current charges up the capacitor, and the amount of charge stored depends on the product of the capacitance and the voltage applied. When the capacitor is fully charged, further increase in voltage does not lead to any further increase in charge. The amount of charge stored on the capacitor can then be calculated using simple equations.
