Transient voltage suppressor is an electrical device which limits the transient overvoltage in the circuit. The most common type of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) is the diode, which acts as a one-way valve for electricity. MALS06800L is a radial leaded, glass encapsulated TVS diode (also known as transient voltage suppressor).

The MALS06800L TVS diode is used to protect electronic circuits from transient voltage surges that may occur due to lightning, electrostatic discharge, or other forms of transient voltage, such as power supply short circuits. This diode has a reverse standoff voltage of 6.8V. It also has a maximum surge current of 8.0A (at 8/20µs waveform and 80% duty cycle) and a maximum reverse clamping voltage of 14.2V at 5A. The device has a fast response time of less than 5ns, making it suitable for use in high-speed communication and automotive applications.

The working principle of the MALS06800L is that when a voltage surge occurs, the diode turns on and starts conducts current, and therefore, the unwanted transient voltage is clamped to the designed maximum peak, thus, the device is able to protect the sensitive electronic components. The diode has a typical capacitance of 10pF at 1MHz and a typical leakage current of 1µA at 6.8V. Furthermore, the device has excellent ESD performance, with a maximum Human Body Model (HBM) ESD rating of 20kV.
