The MAX263ACWI+ is a low-power, low-voltage dual-polarity power-supply regeneration controller specifically designed for microcontroller applications. It reduces system power consumption by switching the power supply voltage between 3.3 and 5V. This prevents the microcontroller from experiencing overvoltage or undervoltage conditions, prolonging battery life. The MAX263ACWI+ also features programmable undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection.

The MAX263ACWI+ controller regulates input voltage and current to ensure that the output voltage stays within predetermined limits. The device includes an integrated MOSFET switch, precision error amplifier, external component reference and bias circuitry, undervoltage and overvoltage control logic, and thermal warning logic. The MAX263ACWI+ is designed to work with ANY microcontroller system, and boasts a fast max switching frequency of 1MHz.

Working Principle

The MAX263ACWI+ uses a combination of error amplifier and loop compensation to control a MOSFET switch and provide output voltage regulation. When the microcontroller boots up, the MAX263ACWI+ begins to control the output voltage. If the output voltage exceeds the limit (e.g. if the current mode turns on and the output voltage rises above the predetermined threshold), the MAX263ACWI+ detects the error and reduces the power supply voltage (by cutting off the MOSFET switch). If the output voltage starts to dip below the desired level, the MAX263ACWI+ increases the power supply voltage until the desired voltage is reached. The device will maintain the output voltage within predetermined boundaries until the microcontroller is unplugged.

The MAX263ACWI+ also includes a feature called Over Discharge Protection (ODP). If the battery voltage is detected to be too low, the MAX263ACWI+ will automatically shut down the system and disconnect from the output. This prevents the battery from becoming dangerously drained and damaged, or worse, requiring an immediate replacement.
