PMIC (Power Management ICs) Gate Drivers intend to regulate the flow of electrical current between two active devices so they can operate at different voltages. They usually consist of a driver IC and an isolated MOSFET or IGBT. One of such products is MAX4427CSA, a high-efficiency, power-staged gate drive IC ideal for SiC and GaN power switches in high-efficience, high-frequency applications.

MAX4427CSA is suitable for synchronous rectification, high-performance power supplies, and offline AC-DC converters. It features low-side and high-side driver stages, available in industry-standard small-package formats, and provides small-footprint solutions with excellent EMI noise performance. In terms of structure, the MAX4427CSA consists of four essential components: an isolated battery of gates (low-side, three-input OR, high-switch, and high-side drivers), a fault detect input, a logic circuit, and an input/output interface.The first component, the isolated battery of gates, is used to drive the N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs that linearize the voltage across the couplings. This isolated battery of gates allows for low-side and high-side drivers to be connected directly to the drivers. The low-side driver is used to turn off the load, while the high-side driver is used to turn it on.The fault detect input helps to implement fault protection. It monitors the outputs of the low-side driver and high-side driver for a valid input/output interface. If the input/output does not match the expected valid output, the fault detect input signals the over-current fault condition.The logic circuit is used to implement the logic functions required for driving the low-side and high-side drivers. It integrates the fault protection logic and provides a logic enable/disable signal.The input/output interface is used to connect the MAX4427CSA to the gate driver. It provides the logic signals and power supply voltages.

MAX4427CSA finds its application field in motor control, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), general DC-DC converters, power factor correction (PFC) converters, and solar energy applications.In terms of working principles, when the MAX4427CSA receives an input signal, it is the logic circuit that will evaluate the logic equation based on the logic inputs and controls the two gate drivers accordingly. When the logic input signals indicate the power switch should turn OFF, the low-side driver will execute a logic-controlled turn ON and the high-side driver will execute a logic-controlled turn ON.

In addition, MAX4427CSA provides general isolation tests with 500VDC and 7A of leakage current.
