Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are chips specifically designed to manage the various electrical signals of an electronic system. A Voltage Reference is a device whose output voltage remains constant regardless of the power supply voltage, temperature or load variations. The MAX6161BESA+ is a very low temperature-coefficient, low-power, precision interface voltage reference.
At the heart of the MAX6161BESA+ is an improved architecture that delivers lower temperature coefficient and power consumption while maintaining excellent voltage accuracy and output accuracy. The device operates from a +3V to +15V supply and is adjustable from +2.500V to +11.500V with a typical temperature coefficient of 5ppm/°C. The reference voltage is regulated and maintained to within 0.005% maximum over line, load, and temperature conditions. It has an output current capability of ±10mA with a settling time of typically 1µs.
The MAX6161BESA+ utilizes a high-stability voltage-to-current converter and current-to-voltage converter design. The internal error amplifier controls an external resistor network which, in turn, accurately sets the reference voltage. This is done by comparing the internal reference voltage across a resistor R1 to the reference voltage at the output. The error amplifier then adjusts its output to maintain the reference voltage across R1 equal to the output reference voltage. This topology allows for very stable high accuracy over a wide range of temperatures and loads. The device also includes an additional external adjust pin for very fine-gain control.
The MAX6161BESA+ is ideal for handheld devices, such as digital cameras and cell phones, where power conservation is critical. It can also be used in communication systems, process control applications, data acquisition systems, and medical instruments. In addition, the device is designed to operate over an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +125°C with no worst-case adjustment, and is offered in a standard 8-lead SOIC package, making it ideal for operation in environments requiring higher temperature and shock/vibration specifications.
