It is mainly used for applications as such as high accuracy, current or voltage regulation, low temperature sensitivity, and low power requirements. It is ideal for battery-powered applications, especially where air flow and high temperatures are concerns.

Application Field: The MC1403BP1 is mainly used in basic voltage reference circuits, such as constant current sources and adjustable voltage regulators, providing stable and accurate output voltages and currents. Also suitable for under-voltage lockout, voltage multiplying and low resistance current-sensing. In addition, it can also be used in regulated power supplies, regulated lighting systems and temperature compensated high accuracy instruments.

Working Principle: The MC1403BP1 uses a linear feedback control circuit to maintain a stable output voltage when the load current changes. The reference voltage is set using an external resistor connected to the input (Vol). The voltage at this terminal is compared to a precision internally trimmed reference voltage whose value is about VREF=2.5V for the MC1403BP1.

The output voltage is regulated through an error amplifier, an offset voltage generator and a current limiter. The output voltage is regulated by varying the feedback current in proportion to the input voltage from the external resistor, the output voltage is controlled by forcing the output voltage of the error amplifier to match the voltage at the Vol terminal. This keeps the output voltage at its preset level, irrespective of the load current.

The MC1403BP1 also has an overload protection feature. Its internal circuitry senses any excessive load current, instantly cutting off the output voltage and thus protecting against any damage to the device. This can be reset by momentarily removing the input voltage.
