Optoisolators are a type of electrical interface that use an optoelectronic component to couple an input signal into an output one that is isolated from the input. Optoisolator components are usually sandwiched between a light source and a photodiode, and come in various forms for different applications. MOC3051FM is a type of optoisolator specifically designed for zero voltage switching applications and features a triac with a sensitive gate coupled with a photovoltaic infrared LED.
The MOC3051FM application field primarily includes appliances, lighting control, power, medical, and communication markets. In the appliances industry, the MOC3051FM can be used for temperature control, including refrigerators, air conditioners, ovens, and water heaters. In communication markets, the MOC3051FM can be used in telephone switching systems, including those used for voice broadcasts. The working principle of the MOC3051FM optoisolator is based on the photo-coupling between the LED and the photodiode. When the LED light is incident on the photodiode, the current generated through a voltage source forward biases the LED. The electrons emitted from the LED are stored in the base-emitter junction of the photodiode, thereby creating a light-responsive photocurrent. When the light is directed at the photodiode, the current forward biases the base-emitter junction and triggers the triac attached in the photodiode, resulting in triac gate turn-on.
The MOC3051FM optoisolator can work at a range of voltages from 10 to 30V and at a switching temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. The MOC3051FM features a monolithic integration of an LED, a photodiode, and a sensitive gate triac in an SC-70 package and has an isolation voltage of 2500Vrms. Moreover, the optoisolator incorporates a metal glaze layer to ensure superior thermal impedance for the LED.
The MOC3051FM optoisolator also contains a Zero Voltage crossing detector along with a snubber circuit which reduces the voltage stress on the triac and increases its lifetime. The LED to photodiode ratio is also optimized in order to provide high level of reliability at different switching conditions. The MOC3051FM optoisolator is also built with an improved construction to ensure low on-state resistance.
