The MSMLG7.5CAE3 is a dual-gate, zener-diode-based TVS-diode specifically designed for transient voltage protection applications. The device combines a zener diode and two field plate gates connected in series. The two opposite-polarity field plates act as capacitors, which act together to significantly enhance the reverse break-over region of the diode. The two gates of the MSMLG7.5CAE3 also work together to lower the transient response time. The device has a nominal stand-off voltage of 7.5V and can handle transients up to 42V, making it suitable for many high-voltage applications.
In operation, the MSMLG7.5CAE3 works in two stages. In the first stage, the diode’s zener region prevents undesirable voltage from reaching the device’s “on” area. During this period, the gate capacitance is charged up. In the second stage, the second gate is released, and the device turns to a very low impedance state and quickly clamps the voltage to the breakdown voltage. The gate capacitance then quickly discharges, restoring the diode to its original shunting state.
