Optical Sensors - Photodiodes
A photodiode is a semiconductor device that consists of a junction between n-type and p-type material that contains a built-in voltage. Photodiodes are used in applications ranging from light detection, to photosynthesis measurement, to signal receiving and modulation. Here we will focus on the application and working principle of the ODD-15W photodiode.
ODD-15W Application Field
The ODD-15W photodiode is typically used in the measurements of light intensities, particularly in medical applications such as spectral imaging, fiber optics, and photobioreactor systems. It is also used in radiation and photovoltaic sensing, as well as in photoemission. The photodiode can detect light wavelengths in the visible region ranging from 400 to 1000 nm. The active diameter of the photodiode is a compact 3.05 mm making it ideal for applications where space is limited.
ODD-15W Working Principle
The ODD-15W photodiode works by allowing light to strike a silicon junction. The photons pass through the junction and generate holes and electrons due to the absorption of the light energy by the silicon material. These holes and electrons flow across the junction which results in a photocurrent that is proportional to the amount of light detected by the photodiode. This photocurrent is directed to the output terminal of the photodiode.
The photodiode has an internal voltage drop of 1.2 volts which usually limits the use of the device. The output signal from the photodiode is also affected by the variations in the junction temperature. The response time of the device largely depends on the resistance that is present in the photodiode components. The ODD-15W photodiode can operate at temperatures ranging from -25 to +85 Celsius.
The ODD-15W photodiode is a self-contained device that does not need any external circuitry to operate. It can be directly connected to a measuring device. It has a very small junction capacitance and can connect with standard connectors such as SMA and SMB connectors. The ODD-15W photodiode can be used in a wide range of applications from light measurements to radiation detection and is a versatile and reliable device for any laboratory or industrial setup.
