1. Describe

The OPA373 and OPA374AIDBVT series of op amps offer low power and low cost with excellent bandwidth (6.5 MHz) and slew rate (5 V/µs). The input range is 200 mV beyond the supply rails and the output range is within 25 mV of the supply rails. The speed-to-power ratio and small size make it ideal for portable and battery-powered applications. The OPA373 family includes a shutdown mode. Under logic control, the amplifier can switch from normal operation to less than 1 µA standby current. The OPA373 and OPA374AIDBVT series of operational amplifiers are designed for single or dual supply from 2.7 V to 5.5 V and operate from 2.3 V to 5.5 V. All models are rated from –40°C to 125°C.

6. Operating Voltage

The OPA373 and OPA374AIDBVT op amps are specified and tested over a supply range of 2.7 V to 5.5 V (±1.35 V to ±2.75 V). However, the supply voltage may range from 2.3 V to 5.5 V (±1.15 V to ±2.75 V). Supply voltages above 7 V (absolute maximum) may permanently damage the amplifier. Parameters that vary with supply voltage or temperature are shown in Typical Characteristics.

7. Common mode voltage range

The input common-mode voltage range of the OPA373 and OPA374AIDBVT series exceeds the supply rails by 200 mV. This extended range is achieved through complementary input stages: an N-channel input differential pair in parallel with a P-channel differential pair. The N-channel pair is valid for input voltages close to the positive supply rail, typically (V+) − 1.65 V to 200 mV above the positive supply, while the P-channel pair is 200 mV below the negative supply to approximately (V+) - 1.65 V. There is a 500-mV transition region, typically (V+) - 1.9 V to (V+) - 1.4 V, with both pairs on. Therefore, the transition region (i.e., both stages are on) can range from (V+) - 2.2 V to (V+) - 1.7 V on the low side, until (V+) - 1.6 V to (V+) - 1.1 V on the high side . Within the 500mV transition region, PSRR, CMRR, offset voltage, offset drift, and THD may be reduced compared to device operation outside this region.

8. Capacitive Loading and Stability

The OPA373 family of operational amplifiers can drive a variety of capacitive loads. However, all op amps can become unstable under certain conditions. Op amp configuration, gain, and load values are some of the factors to consider when determining stability. Op amps in unity-gain configurations are most susceptible to capacitive loads. The capacitive load reacts with the op amp's output resistance and any additional load resistance to create a pole in the small-signal response, reducing phase margin. The OPA373 family of op amps perform well in unity-gain configurations with purely capacitive loads up to about 250 pF. The increased gain allows the amplifier to drive more capacitance. One way to improve capacitive load drive in unity gain configuration is to insert a small (10Ω to 20Ω) resistor RS in series with the output. This configuration significantly reduces ringing while maintaining the DC performance of purely capacitive loads.

9. Application Information

The OPA373 and OPA374 series of operational amplifiers are unity-gain stable and suitable for a variety of general-purpose applications. Rail-to-rail inputs and outputs make it ideal for driving sampling analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Excellent AC performance makes it ideal for audio applications. The Class AB output stage is capable of driving a 100kΩ load connected anywhere between V+ and ground. The input common-mode voltage range includes both supply rails, so the OPA373 and OPA374 series op amps can be used in virtually any single-supply application up to a 5.5 V supply. Rail-to-rail input and output swing ignificantly increases dynamic range, especially in low-supply applications. Power-supply pins must be bypassed with 0.01-µF ceramic capacitors.
