P2103ZC Thyristors are designed for the protection of systems and circuits against electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and lightning and surge, commonly known as “surge pulses”. These devices are used for power distribution systems, telecommunications equipment, electronic components, and medical devices among others.
A thyristor is a semiconductor device made of layers of materials with varying electrical conductivity levels, including anode and cathode. This allows the construction of a three-terminal device composed of an anode, cathode, and gate terminal. When connected with appropriate circuits, a P2103ZC thyristor can be made to conduct current, limit and/or regulate surge pulses, and limit the voltages or currents applied to downstream components.
The working principle of the P2103ZC is simple. When an ESD or EFT event occurs, a voltage greater than its turn-on threshold is applied to the gate terminal and current flows between the anode and cathode. This current limits the rise time and amplitude of the surge pulse and dissipates energy away from the circuit. In contrast, a single-terminal thyristor requires a voltage spike that exceeds the turn-on threshold on the anode, which then causes the thyristor to become conductive. This type of thyristor works best for faster rise time surges.
The P2103ZC is designed to provide circuit level protection against ESD, EFT, and surge pulses.
