The PIC16F84A-04E/P is a single-chip, 8-bit microcontroller that is designed to provide a wide range of embedded applications with high levels of integration and performance. It features an enhanced 8-bit central processing unit (CPU), a universal synchronous/asynchronous receiver/transmitter (USART, UART) capable of communicating over four different communication protocols, an analog to digital converter (ADC) and digital to analog converter (DAC) suitable for data acquisition, an advanced power management system, and the ability to incorporate additional peripherals and memory into the applications.
The PIC16F84A-04E/P is ideally suited to a variety of embedded applications ranging from automotive, consumer, industrial, and medical to scientific and communication applications. The architecture is conducive to a wide range of development, including C/C++, assembly, as well as high-level development environments. with the addition of Flash program memory and EEPROM data memory, the PIC16F84A-04E/P is capable of storing code to run multiple programs or functions.
At the heart of the device lies the core of a highly advanced 8-bit central processing unit, which is execution-time efficient, providing fast, compact, and reliable code execution. This CPU is capable of executing instructions at speeds up to 12 MIPS. It features an 8-bit data configurable instruction set and an integrated interrupt controller with four interrupt sources. On-chip Peripheral functions include four Flash program memories, two Timer/Counters, five flexible I/O ports, three capture/compare/PWMs Modules, one USART, one Watchdog Timer, 24MHz internal oscillator, external interrupts, and other advanced peripherals.
The USART feature provides the link between the device and other peripherals with support for four different communication protocols: RS-232, RS-485, IrDA SIR, and SPI. The USART can be configured to operate either as a synchronous receive mode, asynchronous receive mode, synchronous transmit mode, asynchronous transfer mode, or SPI interface among others. The SPI (serial peripheral interface) is especially useful in communication networks because it ensures low latency and fast data transfer rates including a maximum of 10 Mbit/s. The device also features five ports that can be configured for either digital or analog input/output.
The A/D converter is suitable for data acquisition in a wide range of embedded applications. It features a 10-bit, 300k S/s conversion rate to ensure fast acquisition and conversion of analog signals, and D/A converter provides a 13-bit, 0-5V range to ensure accuracy. Additionally, the device features an advanced power management system that supports both Sleep and Hibernate modes, enabling the devices to reduce their power consumption while in idle mode.
