The PL123E-05HSC is a versatile clock generator, phase-locked loop (PLL) and frequency synthesizer with integrated voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The device allows for the generation of multiple clock frequencies from a single low-frequency reference clock. It features a locked-loop crystal oscillator for superior phase noise performance, a built-in phase/frequency detector, ultra-low phase-error phase interpolation, and flexible programmable functions to meet high-end clock system requirements.

The PL123E-05HSC provides typically excellent through-from frequency synthesizing, eliminating the need for a separate oscillator to generate a frequency. The high-performance VCO offers a wide tuning range with a low phase-noise floor and low in-band spurious content. Furthermore, the device provides a wide variety of frequency sources and programmable locking mechanisms such as single-input multiple-reference (SIMR), open/close looped, reversed, dual-output/dual-input, etc. to provide further flexibility.

Working Principle

The PL123E-05HSC uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) to generate high frequency clocks from a single low-frequency reference clock. The device contains two sections, the phase-frequency detector (PFD) and the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The PFD provides a means of comparing the incoming clock’s phase with the reference clock’s phase. The PFD then adjusts the VCO’s frequency so that the output clock will follow the reference’s phase. The PL123E-05HSC also utilizes a fractional-N frequency synthesizer to achieve a higher frequency than would be possible with an integer-N method.

With fractional-N frequency synthesizing, the output frequency can be divided into multiple closely spaced frequencies, allowing the output to be locked to a reference clock with better accuracy. This helps to reduce jitter in the output and provides better stability when the output has a high frequency. Additionally, the PL123E-05HSC can be used to generate multiple clocks with frequencies that are not harmonic with each other, which is especially useful in multi-carrier applications.
