Power-over-USB (PUSB) 3F97X devices are one type of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes. TVS diodes are used to protect circuits from high voltage transient events, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical fast transients (EFT). The 3F97X devices are specifically designed for USB-based applications in consumer electronics and computing, where the fast switching makes them well-suited for data communication and power delivery.
The 3F97X devices protect against relatively low voltage transients, such as those produced by cable discharge events, while providing low capacitance values for signaling. They are available in single-line and differential configurations, and feature an ultra-low capacitance rating of 0.5 pF and a maximum switching speed of >30pF/ns. The family is characterized for both ESD and EFT, and meets the highest level of testing per the IEC61000-4-2 specification. The 3F97X family uses a patented single-ended dual element and differential dual element design, providing high performance and reliable protection.
The working principle of the 3F97X powers-over-USB devices is based on the avalanche breakdown voltage of the diode junction. When the diode is exposed to a voltage that exceeds its breakdown voltage, the diode enters the avalanche breakdown region and begins to conduct current. This current is limited by a predefined overcurrent limit, which is determined by the power dissipation and junction temperature of the diode. Once the current exceeds this limit, the diode turns off and the voltage is reset to its normal operating voltage. This cycle continues until the transient event ceases.
The 3F97X family of TVS diodes provide the best solutions for protecting USB-based applications in consumer electronics and computing from ESD and EFT transients, as it offers the lowest capacitance and highest switching speed.
