RT8487GJ6, a Positive operation step-down converter developed by Richtek, is a LED driver integrated with intelligent current regulation. It features integrated 65V N-Channel MOSFET for converting high input voltage and high current level with excellent efficiency and the small package saves board space and reduces load on the system. It is mainly used for driving warm white and cool white LEDs.

Application Field

The RT8487GJ6 is applicable for LEDs illumination, Industrial lighting, Automotive lighting, TV backlight and a range of other applications. Due to its excellent performance and compact design, it is mainly used in automotive applications.

Working Principle

The RT8487GJ6 is made up of four integrated circuits: buck switch controller, high side MOSFET driver, output current monitoring, and thermal shutdown. It has constant current accuracy of +/-1.3%, a switching frequency of 150KHz, and wide input voltage between 6V ~ 65V, making it suitable for a variety of power sources.

At low voltages, the buck switch controller provides the reference voltage to the buck switch loop, allowing it to follow the input signal and vary the duty cycle. The buck switch will adjust the frequency of the PWM duty cycle for different load conditions. The MOSFET driver then amplifies the PWM signal and modulates the switching of the output stage.

The output current monitoring circuit monitors the LED current and provides additional safety to the application. If the LED current is above the normal level, the current sensing circuit shuts off the driver until the current drops below the normal current level.

The RT8487GJ6 also provides over-temperature protection. If the die temperature of the IC reaches 110°C, the thermal shutdown circuit will shut off the driver until the temperature drops below a safe level.
