Inrush Current Limiters (ICL)

Inrush Current Limiters (ICL) are current-limiting devices that can be used to greatly reduce the inrush current by limiting the total amount of load power that can be initially delivered to a circuit. They are also called “cold start current limiters” or “start-stop switch” since they are primarily used to control the start-up current of a system. ICLs provide level or step-inrush current reduction to a given system or sub-system and can also be used to reduce the instantaneous power consumption/dissipation during operation. The SG306 application field and working principle is a perfect example of an ICL.

The SG306 is a commercial-grade, non-isolated, programmable inrush currentlimiting module designed for controlling inrush current surge events, such as when plugging in a large number of LEDs, from an AC power source. Its design is optimized for LED lighting application with high power factor at up to 85A inrush current. The module adjusts the output to limit the peak inrush current to the required current.

The SG306 uses a combination of two components to limit the inrush current, the first being a resistor-capacitor network that limits the initial inrush current to a maximum of 85A. This resistor-capacitor network also serves to limit the total amount of energy that can be stored in the module. The second component is a special transistor that ensures that the output current remains at the set value. The resistor-capacitor network and the special transistor work together to regulate and limit the inrush current while allowing the desired output current to flow.

The SG306 works in two stages, the first stage being the inrush current limiting and the second stage being the output current limiting. The inrush current limiting occurs immediately upon connection of the AC power source, such as when plugging in a large number of LEDs. During this stage, the resistor-capacitor network limits the maximum inrush current to the value that has been programmed into the module. The output current limiting occurs as the current is transferred from the AC power source to the load.

During the output current limiting stage, the SG306 monitors the current flow and adjusts the output current to ensure that the inrush current does not exceed the programmed level. The SG306 will also adjust the current flow to the load based on the actual load power rating to ensure the desired output current and power level is maintained. In the event of an overcurrent, the SG306 will reduce the output current until the overload condition is cleared.

The SG306 application field and working principle makes it a perfect choice for LED lighting applications due to its ability to limit the inrush current while still providing ample power to the LEDs. This ICL is an efficient and cost-effective solution for controlling inrush current surges as it eliminates high inrush currents and ensures that the desired power level is efficiently delivered to the load.
