RFID (radio frequency identification) technologies have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to their ability to offer secure identification and tracking solutions for a wide range of applications, from shopping and logistics to asset management and medical diagnostics. The heart of any RFID system is the reader module, which is responsible for communicating with RFID tags and transferring data back to the system. In this article, we’ll discuss three of the most common types of RFID reader modules: SM, GM, and UB, including their application fields and working principles.
SM
The SM (surface mount) reader module is a compact, lightweight, and low-cost option for RFID systems. The SM type of module is well suited for consumer applications such as retail, closet tracking, and access control. It is also frequently used in applications that involve short-range communication between the RFID tag and the reader module, such as in office automation, asset tracking, and medical device management.
The SM module operates using close-coupled technology where all components are mounted on the same board. This allows the system to have a faster communication speed, improving read/write range and performance. The read/write range of the SM module usually ranges from 2 cm up to 50 cm.
GM
The GM (guided mode) reader module is designed for applications that require longer read/write ranges than those provided by the SM module. The read/write range of this module ranges from 1 m to 15 m, and the GM module has the capability to track the position of the RFID tag in real-time. Thus, it is a good choice for applications such as asset tracking, inventory management, and logistics.
The GM module utilizes an optical guiding system to enable long-range communication. This system uses a large, round antenna to track and focus on the RFID tag, allowing the GM module to maintain a constant communication with it, regardless of the tag’s orientation or movement. This ensures a high read/write speed.
UB
The UB (ultra-broadband) reader module is designed for applications that require a wide read/write range, such as logistics, inventory management, and asset tracking. The UB module has a read/write range of up to 200 m, making it ideal for tracking RFID tags over longer distances.
The UB module utilizes ultra-broadband technology to achieve a long read/write range. This technology allows the reader module to detect the RFID tag at lower signal strength, reducing the overall power usage. Additionally, the UB module supports multiple protocols, making it compatible with a wide range of RFID tags.
Overall, the SM, GM, and UB reader modules all have their own advantages and applications. The SM module is suitable for applications with short read/write ranges, while the GM and UB modules offer longer ranges for applications such as asset tracking and inventory management.
